East Devon Coast

Devon’s Jurassic Coast is an area of immense ecological and geological importance and has the distinction of UNESCO World Heritage status. Geology can be experienced at every turn. At Budleigh Salterton enormous pebbles 440 million years old litter the foot of the cliffs, at Ladram Bay the dramatic stacks reveal Triassic deserts and salt lakes, and at Beer the red sandstone cliffs give way to towering white chalk laid down during the Cretaceous Period, over 70 million years ago. Inland from the coast the landscape of East Devon is characterised by undulating hills dissected by an intricate pattern of small fields, ribbons of ancient woodlands and open downland, all of which support a wealth of wildlife.

The itinerary will vary depending upon the grade and duration of the tour, but over the course of their holiday all guests will be able to enjoy the beautiful stretch of South West Coast Path between Budleigh Salterton in the west and Lyme Regis in the East, and also a delightful stretch of the East Devon Way which meanders inland from the coast to pass through a rolling landscape of green hills which appears to have changed little since the nineteenth century.

Highlights of the walking itinerary will include the seastacks in Ladram Bay, the extensive views from the top of Salcombe Hill Cliff above Sidmouth, the bird life on the estuary of the river Otter, the charming village of Branscombe, the walk out onto The Cobb in Lyme Regis, and the views from Woodbury Castle.

Lonely Planet lists hiking the South West Coast Path as one of the world's great adventures with “walking at its most diverse, most spectacular and most delicious", and we would definitely agree with that description.

Accommodation
Unless you ask us to customise your trip, and choose alternative accommodation, your holiday on the East Devon Coast will be based at a comfortable family-run guest house in the genteel regency seaside resort of Sidmouth. Your room will have ensuite bathroom facilities and you will have a choice of continental or full English breakfast. Sidmouth has a variety of quality inns and restaurant serving meals in the evening.

If you prefer hotel accommodation we can arrange a room at the elegant Hunter's Moon Hotel which lies slightly inland and enjoys an elevated position above the River Sid. The hotel is surrounded by beautiful gardens and a private gateway leads onto a National Trust-owned scenic riverside walk, The Byes. A ten minute walk along The Byes leads into the centre of Sidmouth. The additional cost for accommodation at the Hunter's Moon Hotel will depend upon the room type chosen and whether you wish to include evening meals in the hotel restaurant.
