Hebden Bridge, our base for the southern section of the Pennine Way, is a former mill town which grew up in the early 19th century when its location in the Calder Valley made it a prime site for development during the Industrial Revolution. The town became famous for the production of heavy cotton cloth, but it’s prosperity declined under pressure from foreign competition.

Today those mill building which still remain have been converted to smart apartments and Hebden Bridge has a range inns, restaurants and takeaways offering food in the evenings. It also has a number of shops where one can purchase the makings of a packed lunch.

The daily meeting point in Hebden Bridge is outside the Hebden Bridge Picture House on New Road.
