St Ives, our base for this section of the Cornwall Coast Path, is one of the best known of Cornwall's towns and, nowadays, internationally famous as a centre for artistic excellence. The part of the town which surrounds the old fishing port is a jumble of steep streets, narrow cobbled alleyways and colourful stone cottages.

On the headland which juts out from the western side of St Ives Bay there is the site of an ancient British settlement, and a fishermans' chapel stands on what was the site of the 6th century chapel of St Ia. There are numerous small art galleries scattered around the town, including the Barbara Hepworth Museum, and the St Ives Tate Gallery.
