Newquay, our base for this section of the South West Coast Path, from Crackington Haven to Perranporth, is a major tourist destination on the North Cornwall coast.

During medieval times Newquay grew up as a small fishing village, but expanded during the 18th century as it also began to support a thriving tin mining industry. The stone harbour which one sees today was built in 1800. During the Victorian era the arrival of the railway saw Newquay expand as a family holiday destination. More recently the long sandy beaches have established Newquay as the surf capital of Cornwall, and a venue for a round of the world surfing championships. Newquay has a zoo, an aquarium and two small theme parks.
