The Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail runs for 79 miles (129kms) through the chalk hills between Hessle Haven at the northern end of the Humber Bridge and Filey Brigg on Yorkshire’s North Sea coast. The Yorkshire Wolds mark the northern extremity of the same band of chalk which forms the white cliffs of Dover and also surfaces in Dorset, Wiltshire, on the Chilterns and on the Berkshire Downs. This makes them something of anomaly - a classic southern English landscape set amongst the wild country of the north.

The gently rolling hills and wooded valleys of the Yorkshire Wolds are quiet and secluded, the attractive villages are unspoilt, and the lanes are largely deserted. The flora and fauna is typical of chalk downland, with an abundance of orchids in season, wild thyme, song birds in the hedgerows, kestrels overhead and hares and lapwings in the fields. 

The National Trail is unique in that it has become a rural work of art, with the establishment of 'WANDER - Art on the Yorkshire Wolds Way'. As you follow the trail you will spot specially commissioned works of art which fit seamlessly into their location. They include, benches, gates, signposts, earthwork sculptures, wildlife carvings and even a bus shelter beside the village pond in Fridaythorpe.  

The route passes through very few settlements of any size but the villages encountered include Brantingham, Goodmanham, Millington, Huggate, Fridaythorpe, Thixendale, and Wintringham.

Highlights of the Yorkshire Wolds Way include the dramatic dry valleys of Thixen Dale, Swin Dale, Holm Dale; views of the massive Humber Bridge and Filey Brigg at the start and finish of the route; the incongruous Gothic war memorial in Brantingham ('cobbled together' from masonry features taken from Hull's disused Town Hall!); the ancient and atmospheric church at Fridaythorpe, the superb Norman architecture and font in St Nicholas Church at North Newbald (a short and worthwhile detour off the main route); the deserted mediaeval village of Wharram Percy; and the unique art instillations established along the route.
